The paths of Chhipa and M.Hulot have crossed continually over the last few months, and we were delighted to catch up with the lovely Anna who runs it. We dropped in to find out more about her beautiful bags and accessories, and how M.Hulot came to be.
Can you tell us what you do in your own words?
I’m the founder and designer of M.Hulot. I make simple pared-down bags and accessories, with a focus on craftsmanship and natural veg leather, but with a contemporary design-led edge. I am the sole business owner and do everything from designs, costings, styling photoshoots through to instagram! It’s busy and challenging, but such a privilege.
How did you get into it?
I studied clothing design but fell into working for the high street, designing accessories. I loved learning the trade, but had my own vision and wanted to do something with authenticity.
Do you have a typical working day?
A typical working day at the studio revolves around answering emails and business stuff in the morning, with more creative and design time in the afternoon. Out of the studio it is less typical, which is a welcome change. It can vary from working on product development or production with my makers, styling shoots with photographers to collaborating with other designers on pop-ups and showcases.
What is your daily uniform (if anything)?
I’m casual for the studio- usually jeans and a shirt or dungarees, but I love to wear something a bit more special for meetings or events. I have a particular obssession with shirt dresses and have 3 that have become my go to pieces; one navy from Cos, a particularly luscious stone-washed heavy black silk from Kelly Love and a Ralph Lauren Pin stripe that was a fantastic charity shop find. I also love my Chhipa stripe shirt for staying low-key, but making an impact! I wear it as an overshirt as well as a conventional shirt.
What are you working on at the moment?
Design wise I am working on some soft bag shapes in a beautiful oiled leather. My customers love tans and navys, but I am also introducing a khaki, mixed back to a nude. Following on from a successful show at Design Junction I will be perfecting a sister bag to our very popular Gia, but just slightly bigger in size.
What do you do when you’re not working?
I have a gorgeous one year old son, who is keeping me extremely busy outside of M.Hulot. One of his favourite pass times is emptying my M.Hulot Pinta purse of all it’s cards and receipts- A Very helpful little chap!
Anything you'd like to add?
I have a beady eye on your Kapara! Just realised that is a key feature of my daily uniform- a lovely big scarf.
Look out for our brand new knitted accessories, which have just launched on the website. They celebrate 5 years in business this Autumn. They are exclusive to mhulot.co.uk and Folk on Lambs Conduit St.
